# Lab catalog

> Groups, tests, reference ranges, and display order for lab reports.

# Lab catalog

Requires **Lab management** permission.

The catalog defines what can appear on a lab report: groups, sub-groups, units, and test types.

## Structure

Typical hierarchy:

1. **Group** (for example Hematology)
2. **Sub-group** (optional)
3. **Test / analyte** with units
4. **Reference ranges** (numeric) or qualitative options

## Display order

Use catalog **display order** so new reports list tests in the order clinicians expect. Inline help in the portal explains order for new reports.

Closing a catalog create/edit dialog with unsaved fields (or refreshing the page) asks you to confirm before discarding.

If someone else updated the same catalog item (or reordered the list) while you were editing, ClinZero asks you to **reload** or **overwrite** before saving.

## Delete unused vs deactivate

* **Delete** permanently removes a group, sub-group, unit, or test type that is **not** referenced by children or lab report results. You must type the name (or abbreviation) to confirm.
* **Deactivate** (edit the item and set status to **Inactive**) keeps the row for history and stops it from appearing in new-report lookups.
* If you try to delete something that is still referenced, ClinZero blocks the delete and offers **Deactivate instead**.

## Reference ranges

* Numeric tests: set low/high (and gender/age rules if your catalog supports them).
* Qualitative tests: define allowed result values instead of a numeric range.

## Before the first report

1. At least one active [lab](/lab/labs)
2. Catalog groups and tests for that lab
3. Then open [Reports](/lab/reports)
